Krishna Janmashtami Celebration In India


Janmashtami is the birthday of Lord Krishna, the most famous God of the Hindus. Janmashtami is the eighth day in the month of Sravana (August-September) and it is celebrated all over India. Lord Krishna was born in the year of Visvavasu, appx. 5,227 years ago. Janmashtami Rasleela, Janmashtami Dahi Handi, Janmashtami Krishna Bal Leela, Janmashtami Geeta Saar are integral part of this celebration. Janmashtami celebration in India is mostly popular in Mathura, Vrindavan, Dwarka and ISKCON. The most popular temples where Janmashtami is being celebrated are -

Krishna Janma Bhoomi Mandir, Mathura
Banke Bihari Mandir, Vrindavan
Guruvayur Temple, Kerala
Udupi Sri Krishna Temple, Karnataka
Srinath Temple, Rajasthan
Dwarkadhish Temple, Gujarat

The temples are decorated with Janmasthami decorative items such as Krishna Idols and Sculptures, Krishna Wall Hangings, Krishna Door Hangings or Torans and many more. Janmasthami fast is popular among Indian women. You can listen to Janmashtami Bhajans at the temples. In evening there is Arti for Janmashtami and the Janmashtami Pooja Process begins.

The celebration reaches its peak at midnight, with the birth of Lord Krishna, with lot of hymns, arti taking place and blowing of the Conch (shankh), rocking the cradle of Lord. The idol of lord is bathed with Panchamrit (A mixture of milk, ghee, oil, honey and Gangajal). The Panchamrit is later distributed as Prasad to the devotees along with other sweets.

Janmashtami is celebrated for over two days as “Rohini” nakshatra and Ashtami may not fall on the same day. The first day known as Krishnashtami, as the birth of Bhagwan Krishna falls on the eighth day after Raksha Bandhan, which generally falls in the month of August. The second day is known as Kalashtami.

People send Janmashtami cards and give Janmashtami gifts specially sweets and dry fruitsto each other.

This day is also great for food lovers as on this auspicious eve of Janmashtami people can have Janmashtami Special Recipes such as Kheer, Murukku, Gopalkala, Kalakand, Shrikhand, Singhare ki Poori, Pedha, Til ki Kheer (Sesame Pudding), Aloo/Arwi ki Chaat and many more.
