Janmashtami is the birthday of Lord Krishna, the most famous God of the Hindus. Janmashtami is the eighth day in the month of Sravana (August-September) and it is celebrated all over India. Avatar (2009 Film) by James Cameron - Film/Movie review and some thoughts

Yes . . . its the biggest spectacle of the decade . . . and yes its visually pure magic . . . rock solid in every department of film making . . .except for writing maybe . . . but we won't go there . . . cause some Films are wayyyyy bigger than the story they are tryin...g to tell . . . and some Directors just make you realize the power of Cinema as a medium of storytelling . . . way more impactful than a book / play / radio / what have you sometimes . . . James Cameron is such a man . . . there ain’t no doubt about that one . . . So yes . . . this isn't a review at all . . . just some thoughts on the Film . . . Lets look at the intention behind the Film for starters . . . why would Cameron want to make this Film??? And what you garner and see is that here’s a man who first and foremost wants to raise the bar . . . here’s a dreamer and a visionary who sits there dreaming a magical dream . . . and finds a way of actually making it happen . . . and that to me is the biggest power of cinema . . . that beyond the dream created in your head and then on a laptop . . . someone has to actualize it as well . . . its lost otherwise . . . and hence my constant angst about a Film having to be as good technically as in its writing . . . but I deviate here . . . what got me most about Avatar was somehow the visual of a whol bunch of Film Technicians sitting out there wanting to do their BEST . . . to push the envelop hard and tear it . . . to strive for the excellence that their dreams show . . . and actually achieving it . . . such an inspiring visual . . . and am humbled and moved by it . . . and sad . . . because this is the ONE thing I find missing the most in our films / industry . . . we just don’t intend excellence . . . our darnest best . . . why????? When??? Will we ever??? Then my mind goes to the day James Cameron must have sat there looking at his Final Copy . . . the dream come alive in front of his eyes . . . must he have had tears in his eyes about it . . . relief, pride, excitement . . . or a self assured man saying . . . damn! I did it again!!! Or maybe even a cocky man . . . saying next!!!! Would love to know . . . but what’s important is that Avatar makes me think of all this while I’m watching the movie and for hours later . . . perhaps till . . . days later who knows . . . the true stamp of a great film . . . Technically . . . am not even proficient to comment on it . . . just know that watching live action in 3D . . . swimming in front of your eyes . . . seeming touchable . . . making it all look so hyper real is such an addiction that seriously 2D is going to be boring now . . . I don’t even know enough about the new technology he cracked in creating this Film . . . but all I can think of is the man who creates Aliens, True Lies, Terminators, Titanic and now Avatar is in fact a Scientist who can create Art . . . and that too for mass consumption . . . which to me is the true definition of a Film Maker . . . in the tradition of a Quantum Physicist if you will . . . where Science meets Philosophy . . . James Cameron does that for you . . . While I gush . . . the story comes to my mind . . . but before I even get into it . . . the point is that Cameron has always chosen the Speilberg path . . . of telling you simple or actually very simplistic stories mounted on a very, very large scale . . . with heroes called Jack, John, Jake . . . which have to be made on a budget of Millions of dollars . . . you’ve got to earn those millions back . . . which means every human being on the planet has to watch it . . . well almost . . . which means your story / script has to be moron proof . . . it has to be basic . . . understood across cultures . . . age groups . . . sensibilities . . . it HAS to be simplistic . . . now whether Cameron consciously chose that as a his style or whether that’s what comes to him naturally . . . I don’t know . . . Speilberg tried proving his seriousness with Schindler’s List and Munich . . . Cameron hasn’t bothered yet . . . but the point being, Avatar’s story / screenplay cannot possibly get any more complicated or layered than that . . . structurally its standard hollwyood with themes . . . set ups and pay offs and 3 acts firmly in place . . . the only lack I felt was that unlike Titanic . . . it isn’t a very FELT movie . . . it doesn’t feel like the Writer ie Cameron again infused the characters and the set up with too much emotion . . . somewhere technology took over . . . so Avatar leaves you dazzled but not very moved . . . I have a feeling the sequel would take care of that . . . Themes wise though, I have lots to say on the story / film . . . it is such a beautiful blend of myths . . . there are those blue bodied gigantic natives on a planetary moon . . . totally like Vishnu’s 10 avatars right to the point of tikas on foreheads a la Iskcon . . . the birds that are so much like Garuda . . . yet faces that you feel might be Afican beneath . . . and accents that are French or Spanish . . . Music that is Oriental often . . . and philosophy that most certainly is . . . in one broad stroke, the Film pits it as a White vs ‘Colored’ people literally . . . as much as humans vs aliens . . . as much as US vs rest of the world . . . a lovely blend of ethnicities . . . and in these allegories, Avatar is such a brilliant concept . . . it takes all the Buddhist / Hindu philosophies of Nature, Kundalini (at the base of their plaits) . . . connecting to other beings (plait connects to horse literally) . . . the collective consciousness (the Tree) . . . and makes them literal and visual . . . and easy to understand . . . what a triumph that is . . . it makes the simple message of Nature vs humanity so powerful . . . it makes villains out of myopic corporate vision and numb brained military destruction come to life . . . It reminds you of Iraq, Vietman, etc in its visuals rather consciously . . . when that the big tree comes down, I am moved . . . and for some reason reminded of the Bamiyan Buddha being torn down in Afghanistan by the Taliban . . . every frame has so many references . . . informed yet simplistic . . . sometimes a bit too underlined . . . but I’m impressed . . . because there’s basically something for everyone . . . I can go on some more . . . but will spare you . . . the simple point being that Avatar heralds the new age of Cinema, affecting even our shores . . . and the thronging crowds giving our Industry enough impetus to learn from it . . . will we???? Hollywood take overs apart . . . what moved me most about Avatar was to see a PACKED HOUSE after so long and to the palpable excitement of everyone waiting outside like eager kids . . . dying to catch hold of their 3D glasses and get on to the joyride . . . forgetting your woes for 3 hours and being sucked into a make believe world in a darkened hall . . . that ultimately reminds you of your basic inner goodness . . . Isn’t that what movies are meant to do to us??? Avatar does that . . . no two ways about it.

A healthy food habit and a healthy eating habit is very essential for a healthy lifestyle and childhood is the best time to start practicing a healthy food habit. So every parents should encourage healthy food habits in their kids.

Charity they say begins at home, so does health and happiness. If we carefully observe then we will find that a majority of problem that plagues our day to day life are some how connected to our eradicate lifestyle and eating disorders. In our futile attempt to catch up with the rat race we often don’t hesitate to compromise on our quality of life. This compromise can prove to be very harmful in the long run. Even kids and teenagers are reportedly having diabetes and cardiac arrest barely a few years after their birth.

It is obvious that pondering over such shocking facts won’t really help. What we need to do is to nip the problem of an unhealthy life style in its bud. The best way to do this is to inculcate good eating habits among kids at an early age.

Kids often learn from what they see and it is entirely the parent’s responsibility to be good role models for them. If the parents follow a good lifestyle, eat healthy good and maintain a disciplined life, kids no doubt will feel inspired to follow them. However just following a good life style is not enough; parents also should adequately educate their little ones about the good and bad effects of the food that they consume everyday. This will only help the child to become health conscious, and we all know that an enlightened soul can decide for them what is good and bad for them.

Along with a good lifestyle parents should pay attention to discipline and etiquette. Table manners and proper discipline is also an important part of instilling healthy habits among kids. Peaceful atmosphere and enjoyable conversation s always helps to brighten up the mood of the table.

Kids are generally known to be very fussy with foods and this can often get very irritating. In such a situation maintaing a mid level position is the safest bet. Giving into the kids demand every time will defeat the purpose while turning a deaf ear to the kid’s wishes can invite negative response and in-co-operative behavior from them. The solution to the problem lies in actually maintaining variety in the food that is served. Variety they say is the spice of lie and surely it can go along way to spice up the dinning table for sure. Kids should be encouraged to have their meals along with all the members of the family. This strengthens bonds of family ties and helps to spread the feeling of oneness and compassion.

Allowing the kids to participate in the dinner planning encourages them to take interest in food that is being cooked in the house. Kids feel important when their opinions are asked and when they are made to accompany parents in weekend shopping. It is a serious misconception that restaurants and cafes only serve junk food , often restaurants serves healthy meals , so when dinning out children should be made aware about the cuisines that can actually be delicious and healthy at the same time . Developing a healthy food habit and discipline is not an overnight affair and requires proper discipline, practice and education both for the parents and kids alike.

Sidewiki, Google Sidewiki - controversial new device from google toolbar for public comment on websites

Called Google Sidewiki, the device is integrated in the latest version of Google Toolbar and works with both Firefox and Web Explorer but ironically, not yet Google Chrome. To use Sidewiki, download the latest version of the Google Toolbar and set it to enhanced.

Google has launched a controversial new device that allows the public to comment on any web-site in a side bar displayed in their browser.

When activated, Sidewiki slides across from the left and becomes a browser sidebar, where you can write entries in a vertical column and read the entries of others. To activate Sidewiki, you basically click on the Sidewiki button in your Toolbar menu or the tiny talk bubble on the left hand side of your screen.

It appears that persons can read the Sidewiki comments sent by link whether we have Sidewiki installed or not. When you're logged in to Sidewiki, you'll always see your comments at the top and any others below.

If you have got a Google profile, your picture will appear next to your Sidewiki entry. You can either highlight a definite part of a web page, click the Sidewiki button and comment about it, or you can make a general comment about the entire web page. If you have got Sidewiki installed, you can see comments made on the same web-site by other members of the public and you can forward your Sidewiki comments to colleagues, friends and relatives by direct link, email, Twitter or Facebook.

"Under the hood, we have even more technology that will take your entry about the current page and show it next to webpages that contain the same snippet of text. For example, an entry on a speech by President Obama will appear on all webpages that include the same quote. We also bring in relevant posts from blogs and other sources that talk about the current page so that you can discover their insights more easily, right next to the page we refer to."

Not only does your Sidewiki entry appear on the original page, but if you have highlighted text, your entry also appears on any webpages that contain the same snippet of text that your comment is about. From the official blog post:

These include use of sophisticated language, complex sentences and ideas, user reputation and user history as revealed by your Google profile and comment contributions. Your comments and others can be thumbed up or down using the "useful - yes or no?" device, or reported as abuse, further contributing to your user reputation and "Profile Rank" as Danny calls it.

The potential applications of Sidewiki are interesting and frightening simultaneously. For example, I can see how it could be a useful bookmarking device, allowing you to make notes about a web-site you have found which you could refer to later. You can even embed YouTube videos in Sidewiki (take a look at the Google home page to see this in action).

It also has fantastic potential as an online collaboration device, letting you annotate the pages on a site in conjunction with team members in a similar way to tracking changes in a MS Word document and sharing document versions by Google Docs.

Sidewiki has a nice chance of being spammed by spammers if it is not well controlled.Sidewiki has program policies but spammers don't care about those and trolls don't read them. Besides, one man's graffiti is another man's gospel.

Pope Benedict XVI said Sunday that all of Europe — plus not only this ex-communist country — must acknowledge its Christian heritage as it copes with rising immigration from other cultures plus religions.

The second day of Benedict's pilgrimage to this highly secular country was marked by a joyous open-air Mass that drew tens of thousands of pilgrims plus a sober message for the entire continent.

"History has demonstrated the absurdities to which man descends when he excludes God from the horizon of his choices plus actions," Benedict said.

Church organizers estimated that 120,000 people packed a field beside an airport in the southern city of Brno for what was expected to be the biggest turnout of his trip. Vatican spokesman Rev. Federico Lombardi said it was the largest turnout for a Mass in the history of the Czech Republic.

The 82-year-old pontiff was making the three-day visit as Czechs prepare to mark 20 years since their 1989 Velvet Revolution shook off an atheistic communist regime that ruthlessly persecuted the Roman Catholic Church.

Cheering crowd members from the Czech Republic plus neighboring countries including Austria, Spain, Poland plus Slovakia sang plus waved Czech plus Vatican flags.
